Rent Caps and Just Cause Evictions

Section 2 – California Tenant Protection Act for 2024 (AB 1482)

California Tenant Protection Act of 2024, also known as AB 1482, provides tenant protection by limiting rent increases and enhancing eviction protections. It has been codified in California Civil Code § 1946.2 and subsequent changes.

Other sections of the California Civil Code relevant to rent increases include § 1947.12 (d)(5) and 1946.2 (e)(8). On July 1, 2024, new legislation under California’s AB 12 was codified in California Civil Code 1950.5 and 1950.6.  They limited security deposits to one month’s rent for furnished and unfurnished units.

In addition, there are references to other sections of the California Civil Procedure Code, such as 1161, which relates to Just Cause evictions, and 1101.5, which discusses other Just Cause evictions.

We will then look at exemptions to the code.
